Gas StrutsA Gas Strut consists of a rod that slides within a pressurised sealed tube. As the strut is compressed, the force increases from a high initial value by about 30%. Available in a range of sizes and types - slow or fast extending, in a variety compression ratios - to lift weights from a few kilos to upwards of half a tonne. A Gas Strut is most commonly used as a counterbalance for raising or lowering doors. Typical applications include car tailgates, coach luggage compartments, access hatches, skylights and machine guards. They can also be used for the direct support of sliding weights, for tensioning devices and to provide damping. The Standard Gas Strut is constructed from a nitro-carburised or hard chromium plated carbon-steel piston rod contained within an epoxy powder coated steel tube. The tube contains a small amount of mineral-based hydraulic fluid, which is pressurised. Adjustable Force Gas Struts are supplied pressurised to the maximum force for the strut, allowing the force to be reduced to requirement by releasing pressure via a bleed valve. Also available are stainless steel Gas Struts, which are ideal for use in the marine, food and off-shore industries.
