Rubber edge trims are designed to be installed onto the edge of applications to create a secure seal, prevent an ingress of contaminants, and cover sharp edges. They keep dust, debris, wind, moisture, and water out of the application, protecting the contents inside.

Material options 

Metrol’s gaskets are manufactured from either EPDM or PVC.

EPDM is a type of rubber made from ethylene, propylene, and diene monomer. It is resistant to sunlight, ozone and oxidation. This means that these three things will not cause the rubber to crack, lose elasticity, crumble or degrade, making it ideal for use in outdoor applications. 

The working temperature range of EPDM is -40°C - 120°C, with the material remaining flexible even at the lowest temperature. EPDM is also resistant to certain chemicals such as dilute acids, alkalis, ketones and brake fluid. Without these resistant properties, the rubber edge trim could be susceptible to expanding, hardening, or breaking and therefore not operating as it should. Ketones can commonly dissolve certain materials since they are a harsh solvent. EPDM’s ability to withstand this chemical is an advantage as it means these trims can be used in a wider range of applications, such as painting environments.  

EPDM rubber edge trims should not be used in environments where they will regularly come into contact with oils, fuels, or hydrocarbon solvents, as this will cause the material to degrade.  

PVC is a type of flexible, water-resistant plastic made from vinyl chloride monomers and plasticisers. PVC is resistant to UV sunlight in small amounts; however, over time, it will fade and become brittle. Therefore, if your application is going to be exposed to large amounts of sunlight, EPDM is better suited to this.  

PVC has a working temperature range of -40°C - 120°C and if exposed to temperatures higher than this, it will lose its firmness. 

 

PVC is also resistant to the following chemicals: 

  • Acids 
  • Alkalis 
  • Various aqueous solutions 

The following chemicals will cause PVC to degrade: 

  • Ketones 
  • Esters 
  • Aromatic solvents 

In comparison to EPDM, PVC is a better material for use in oily applications, however its resistance is still only moderate.  

Application use 

Our rubber edge trims with a bubble at the top – 7201, 7203, and 7204 – are ideal for use in applications where the closing force is pushing down onto the seal. Examples include doors, lids and hatches. 

Our rubber edge trims with a bubble at the side – 7101, 7203, and 7205 – are best used in applications where the closing force is horizontal to the gasket, for example, sliding panels. 

Lastly, our low-profile side rubber edge trims 7202 and 7205 are best used for side closing applications with less available space or if a more discreet gasket is preferred.  

Our 7301 cell sponge rubber gasket has been designed to fill gaps, cushion surfaces, dampen vibrations and shocks in machinery or enclosures and lightly seal against contaminants.

What is a rubber edge trim used for? 

A rubber edge trim can be used for cushioning, to add a protective layer over sharp edges, or to create a tight seal that stops debris, moisture, water, wind gusts and dust from entering. 

How do I install rubber edge trims? 

The installation process of our cell sponge 7301 rubber edge trim is straightforward due to its self-adhesive back. Simply peel the back layer off and stick it down in place.  

For our U-Channel trims, they are self-gripping and therefore do not need adhesive to secure in place. Simply press the trim onto the edge and push down firmly. If you have a right-angled corner, it is recommended to cut a small v-notch in the gasket where the corner is, allowing it to seamlessly bend. If your application’s edge is curvy, the gasket will follow this, however; harsh curves may benefit from adding small cuts into the trim. 

To avoid stretching the trim more than necessary, push it onto the application, do not stretch it. 

Can rubber trim seals be used outdoors? 

Yes, our EPDM rubber edge trims are best suited to outdoor conditions. Our PVC trims can also be used outdoors in conditions with moderate UV exposure.

What is the difference between a U Channel, Cell Sponge and Self-Gripping edge trim? 

U Channel

  • ‘U’ shape

Cell sponge: 

  • Sticks onto a flat surface with its adhesive backing

Self-gripping: 

  • Clips onto the edge of the application 
  • Has a hollow bubble that can compress when the application closes against it 
  • This creates a tight and secure seal

How do rubber edge trims stay securely attached in place? 

Self-gripping rubber edge trims have internal wire that holds it firmly in place against the edges of the application. U-channel gaskets grip onto both sides of the application’s edge to secure it in place using steel teeth. Our cell sponge rubber edge trims have an adhesive back that sticks onto the surface to keep it in place.
