Custom Gas Struts

CUSTOM GAS STRUTS

Materials

Our custom gas struts are available in either a mild steel or stainless steel 316 material. Standard steel can undergo treatment to add a protective layer to the material.

Alongside stainless steel materials, we can manufacture your gas strut with food grade oil, suitable for food processing machinery and equipment, promoting safety in the rare occasion that oil leaked.

Finishes

The cylinder (body) of a gas strut can have a technologically advanced paint finish that can provide anti-corrosion protection. These paints are also available in a wide range of colours, meaning your gas strut can match the application’s aesthetics.

The piston (rod) of a gas strut can be customised to have a chrome finish, therefore enhancing resistance to corrosion and daily wear. Alternatively, the piston can also undergo a nitriding treatment to achieve a hard protective layer on the surface.

Dimensions

Metrol custom struts can be manufactured with an endless possibility of dimensions. The general rule of thumb is that extended length = 2x stroke + 35mm (depending on the range). For compressed length, the calculation is: stroke + 35mm. This allows us a lot of flexibility when discussing with you the ideal measurements for your gas strut.

End fittings

End fittings can be attached by a thread, or they can be welded onto the gas strut. The following selection of end fittings are suitable for custom gas struts:

  • Ball ends
  • Eye ends
  • Clevis forks
  • Rose eyes
  • Threads
  • Welded ends
  • Mounting brackets

Accessories

Various accessories are available for Metrol’s custom gas struts to promote safety, longevity, and guidance. Protection tubes have the role of protecting dirt and dust from entering the strut, and the piston from damage such as dents and scratches, therefore eliminating the risk of ruining sealing components. The nylon collar feature encourages enhanced stability of the gas strut, particularly important where lateral loads and vibrations are occurring. Protection tubes can be fitted to any custom or standard strut.

A selection of dust covers are available to shop on our website, suitable for standard and custom struts. dust covers effectively prevent an ingress of dust, dirt and oil into the gas strut, which results in longevity of the product and efficient seal component functionality.

Proline is an advanced seal technique suitable for high temperatures and environments that have a large amount of air born debris. The polyurethane sealing components and wipers deliver high cycle rates, as well as increasing the longevity of the strut. The aim of proline technology is to protect the crucial components of a strut from the harsh environment, to guarantee maximum durability.

Safety locking tubes can be used to lock the strut in place when it is fully extended, used as a fail-safe feature to promote the strut compressing if it suddenly lost pressure. These locking tubes can be made to fit existing struts or new custom ones.

Broad customisations available

  • Dimensions – this includes the stroke, thread, and body lengths, as well as rod and body diameters and extended length. All of these can be customised to meet the exact desired specifications for your application.
  • End fittings – custom rose eyes and clevis forks can be welded onto the gas strut. Alternatively, all available end fittings can be screwed on to threads.
  • Force range – this refers to the minimum and maximum forces the gas strut can be charged to.
  • Materials – corrosion resistant options, such as stainless steel 316, are available to adapt your strut to suit various environments.
  • Finishes – various custom finishes are available for both functional and aesthetic purposes.
Here at Metrol, our team of experts work closely on projects with our customers, so that guidance and technical advice is given every step of the way. This makes the process for you streamlined and efficient – from the design, prototyping, testing and validation stages, to field testing and volume production.
